The Toolkit

Every website and app I actually use, or would hand to my younger brother. Direct link on every single one. Nothing here is an affiliate link — I get paid nothing whichever you click, which is exactly why you can trust the list.

Freecosts nothing, ever Freemiumreal free tier, pay to scale worth it, but only later

01 · Where the work is FIND CLIENTS

Start on marketplaces because they hand you demand you haven't earned yet. Leave them the moment you can get clients directly — the fees and the race to the bottom are real.

UpUpwork FreemiumThe biggest serious marketplace. Higher budgets than Fiverr, harder to get the first job. Apply to 5 well-written proposals a day, not 30 lazy ones. FiFiverr FreeWhere I made my first $7. Buyers come to you, so it's the easiest cold start — but you must escape the $5 tier fast by narrowing your offer. InLinkedIn FreeMassively underrated in Pakistan. Post your work 3×/week and DM founders directly. Zero platform fee, and the clients have real budgets. CoContra FreeCommission-free freelancing. You keep 100%. Smaller pool than Upwork but the clients tend to be startups who move fast. ToToptal Free to applyTop-3% screening, brutal interviews, excellent rates. Not a starting point — a target for year two or three. PpPeoplePerHour FreemiumUK/Europe-heavy. Less crowded than Upwork for design and writing, decent for a second stream of leads. FrFreelancer.com FreemiumHuge volume, lower average quality. Useful for reps and reviews early on. Don't build a career here. WeWe Work Remotely FreeRemote job board. Contract and part-time roles that pay far more than gig work. Apply even when slightly underqualified. RkRemote OK FreeFast-moving remote board with salary ranges shown. Filter to "worldwide" — many listings quietly exclude Asia, this saves your time. WfWellfound (AngelList) FreeStartup jobs and contracts where you talk to founders, not HR. Best place to land a long retainer if your portfolio is sharp. BeBehance FreePortfolio that doubles as a lead source — designers get found here. Post full case studies, not single images. DrDribbble FreemiumVisual-first design community. Great for taste and inspiration; moderate as a client source unless your work is genuinely striking. r/r/forhire & r/slavelabour FreeRough but real. Small first gigs and testimonials live here. Read the rules carefully before posting or you'll get banned. PhProduct Hunt FreeNot a job board — a lead list. Every launch is a founder who just built something and now needs design, video or writing. DM them on day two. HuHunter.io FreemiumFind the real email behind a company domain so your pitch reaches a person instead of info@. 25 free lookups a month.

02 · Learn anything, free SKILLS

There is no paid course that beats these plus 100 hours of actually doing the thing. If you are buying a course before you have shipped ten free projects, you are buying comfort, not skill.

YtYouTube FreeStill the best university on earth. The trick is to search for a specific problem, not a topic — "fix muddy audio in CapCut", not "video editing course". FCfreeCodeCamp FreeFull web development curriculum with real certifications, entirely free forever. If you want to code, start here today. KaKhan Academy FreeRebuild the maths and science foundations school skipped over. No shame in starting at grade six — most adults should. CsCoursera FreemiumUniversity courses free to audit. Financial aid is genuinely available and approved often — apply, most people never bother. eXedX FreemiumHarvard's CS50 is here and it is free. Hardest, best intro to computer science that exists. OdThe Odin Project FreeProject-based full-stack path. Harder than freeCodeCamp, produces better developers because it refuses to hold your hand. Rmroadmap.sh FreeVisual step-by-step roadmaps for every tech role. Cures the "what do I learn next" paralysis in about five minutes. HsHubSpot Academy FreeFree certifications in marketing, sales and content that actually carry weight on a freelance profile. GgGoogle Skillshop FreeOfficial Google Ads and Analytics certifications. Free, recognised, and a fast credibility win for a new marketing freelancer. CdCanva Design School FreeShort, genuinely good design fundamentals. Perfect for non-designers who need work to stop looking amateur. ExExercism FreeCoding practice with free human mentorship in 70+ languages. The feedback loop is what makes it work. MITMIT OpenCourseWare FreeActual MIT lectures, notes and problem sets. Free. Nobody uses it. That's the entire opportunity.

03 · Design & visuals MAKE IT LOOK GOOD

You don't need Adobe to start. You need taste, one tool you know deeply, and enough restraint to leave white space alone.

FgFigma FreemiumThe industry standard for UI, web and brand work. Free tier is plenty for a solo freelancer. If you learn one design tool properly, make it this. CaCanva FreemiumFastest path from idea to posted. No shame in it — plenty of paid social work is delivered in Canva. Just don't let templates become your only style. PpPhotopea FreePhotoshop in your browser. Opens PSD files, runs on a weak laptop, costs nothing. A genuine lifesaver. GiGIMP FreeOpen-source photo editing. Ugly interface, serious capability. Free forever with no watermark and no trial clock. UnUnsplash FreeHigh-quality free photos, commercial use allowed. Credit the photographer anyway — it costs nothing and it's decent. PxPexels FreeFree stock photos and video clips. The video library is the underrated part — great for B-roll when you can't film. GfGoogle Fonts Free1,500+ fonts free for commercial use. Two families per project is a rule worth keeping for your first two years. ClCoolors FreemiumGenerate and lock colour palettes in seconds. Press space until something stops you. RcRealtime Colors FreeTest a palette on a real layout instead of on five floating swatches. Changes how you pick colour permanently. LuLucide Icons FreeClean open-source icon set, consistent stroke weight, free for commercial work. Use one icon family per project. Rbremove.bg FreemiumOne-click background removal. Free previews are fine for social; pay only when you need full resolution. SqSquoosh FreeCompress images without visible quality loss. Every client site you build should run through this first. BlBlender FreeProfessional 3D, animation and VFX, completely free. Brutal learning curve, enormous ceiling, and 3D freelancers are scarce. MwMockup World FreeFree device and print mockups. Presenting a logo on a real object makes weak work look considered — use sparingly.

04 · Video & audio FOR CREATORS

I filmed 32 videos on a phone and edited every one in CapCut. Bad audio kills a video far faster than bad footage — spend your attention there first.

CcCapCut FreemiumWhat I edit everything in. Auto-captions, mobile and desktop, genuinely usable free tier. Perfect first editor. DvDaVinci Resolve FreeHollywood-grade editing and colour, free version with no watermark. Step up here when CapCut starts limiting you. ObOBS Studio FreeFree screen recording and live streaming. The standard for tutorials, course content and client walkthroughs. AuAudacity FreeFree audio editing. Noise reduction plus a gentle compressor will fix 90% of bad phone audio. AeAdobe Podcast Enhance FreeUpload rough audio, get back something that sounds like a studio mic. Feels like cheating. Use it on every video. VeVEED FreemiumBrowser-based editing with fast auto-subtitles. Handy when you're editing on a machine that can't run real software. OpOpus Clip FreemiumTurns one long video into a batch of shorts automatically. Multiplies your output when you have no editor. PbPixabay Music FreeRoyalty-free music and sound effects, no attribution required. Safer than "no copyright music" YouTube channels. FsFreesound FreeEnormous library of free sound effects. Check each licence — most only ask for credit. VqvidIQ FreemiumYouTube keyword and competitor research. Use it to pick titles before you film, not after you flop. TtThumbnailTest FreemiumA/B test thumbnails properly instead of guessing. Thumbnail and title beat edit quality for reach — accept it early. HbHandBrake FreeCompress huge video files before sending to clients on slow internet. Essential if your upload speed is measured in kilobytes.

05 · Writing, notes & AI THINK CLEARLY

Use AI to remove friction, never to replace judgement. A client can tell instantly when nobody thought about their problem — and that's the only thing you're actually paid for.

06 · Getting paid ESPECIALLY FROM PAKISTAN

Getting paid across borders is the part nobody explains. Rules change and vary by country, so always confirm current terms and local regulations yourself before relying on any of these.

PyPayoneer The most common route for Pakistani freelancers. Works with Upwork and Fiverr, withdraws to local banks. Compare its fees against alternatives before committing. WiWise Excellent mid-market exchange rates and transparent fees. Availability of features differs by country — check what's supported for your account. SBPState Bank of Pakistan OfficialThe actual authority on foreign remittances, exporter accounts and what's currently permitted. Read the source, not a WhatsApp forward. PSEBPakistan Software Export Board OfficialFreelancer registration, official schemes and tax guidance for IT exporters. Worth registering once you're earning consistently. FBRFBR (tax) OfficialGet on the filer list early. It is far cheaper and less stressful than fixing it after three years of income. Talk to a real accountant. PPPayPal What most Western clients ask for first. Support varies by country — verify what's available to you rather than assuming. StStripe The cleanest way to take card payments if you're in a supported country. Check the current country list before building around it. WaWave FreeFree invoicing and basic accounting. Send a proper numbered invoice from job one — it changes how clients treat you. IsInvoice Simple FreemiumMake a clean invoice in two minutes with no setup. Good enough until you have recurring clients. BoBonsai Contracts, proposals, invoicing and time tracking in one place. Only worth paying for once freelancing is your actual income. DcFree contract templates FreeAlways use a written agreement, even for a $50 job. Scope, deadline, payment terms, revision limit. It prevents the argument, not just settles it.

07 · Focus & accountability DO THE WORK

Start with my Board — it's free and it's right here. These are what I'd add around it.

08 · English & speaking THE REAL BOTTLENECK

For most people reading this, English is worth more than another design skill. Full method on the English guide — these are the tools it uses.

09 · Mind, body & knowledge THE LONG GAME

You cannot out-hustle four hours of sleep. Ask me how I know.

⚠️ Read this before you open 40 tabs

The most common mistake is collecting tools instead of using one. Pick one from each category you need, ignore the rest for 90 days. A person who knows Figma deeply beats one who has installed Figma, Sketch, Penpot and Canva and has finished nothing in any of them.

Also: nothing on this page is an affiliate link. If a tool changes its pricing or gets worse, tell me and I'll update it — send it here.
